SUPER 10'S 2006 REVIEW

Whitley Bay Rockcliff RFC held their fourth Super 10’s tournament last weekend with 18 teams competing for two trophies, a Cup and a Shield. Touring teams from as far away as Scotland, Coventry, Scunthorpe, Capenhurst Manchester, Northallerton and Derbyshire were joined by local sides Percy Park, North Shields, Prudhoe & Stocksfield, Drews Stags, Albermarle Lions, Pheonix, Northumbria University and Rockcliff.

A first round game separated the teams into the groups for the respective trophies with the winners going into the cup and the losers into the shield competition.

Pick of the opening round was North Shields against Percy Park, with Shields prevailing 20-14 against a scratch Park side. Meanwhile Northumbria University set their stall out with a 27-5 win over Capenhurst.

In the Shield competition, Rockcliff B and Scunthorpe progressed to the final, with Scunthorpe beating Coventry side Earsldon and Capenhurst on their way. Rockcliff B beat North Derbyshire and North Manchester to progress to the final round, which Scunthorpe, last years cup winners, won 15-5.

In the Cup, Albermarle Lions and Northumbria University made it through to the final stage. The student side made it through to the final after beating North Shields and Rockcliff A, whilst Albermarle beat Prudhoe and Stocksfield and Phoenix. In a one sided final the student side proved too strong for Albermarle and they won 31-0 to win the cup.

In the background a number of side events were on going, not least the tug of war competition (the rope was kindly provided by the Rockcliffe Arms) which was won by Prudhoe and Stocksfield. All in all the players and onlookers enjoyed another successful tournament and tournament organiser Dave Hill and his team deserve a pat on the back for all their efforts.
