Match Report
by Eric Brooks |
|
Rockcliff won
their first game since November in this comprehensive defeat
of Durham and Northumberland Division 2 basement team Yarm.
Missing first team regulars Neil and Noel Mather, Neil
Thornton and Andrew Webster, Rockcliff called up the
experience of Doug Ashbridge, Alex Meadows and Simon Lowe to
bolster the pack, with Chris Waddell coming in to stand off. |

Simon Lowe
was one of
several first team debutants |
The home side got off to a great start in the first half when
Waddell cut a great line to snipe through and touch down for
5-0. He converted his own try and then added a penalty to
take his first half tally to ten points. It was then the turn of
the flying yorkshiremen Craig Tomlinson and Simon Tindall who
added a try apiece to take the score at half time up to 20-0.
In the second half Rockcliff extended their lead to 34-0 through
tries from man of the match Josh Donnelly and Alex Meadows, with
Waddell adding two conversions. As Rockcliff took their foot off
the gas, Yarm countered with a spell of sustained pressure and
eventually they were rewarded for their efforts with an
unconverted try as their number eight, supporting his backs,
crashed over from close range.

Rockcliff refocused
and Simon Tindall almost added a second when prop Drew Hayton
rampaged through the Yarm midfield to set up right winger
Tindall who then cut across field to set up Steven Scott on the
left. He beat his man and with Tindall in support he popped the
ball back in to the big hitting right winger but the pass was
just over run and Yarm scrambled the ball clear.
Ashbridge and Lowe
were causing havoc in the loose and they set up full back John
Paul Hipkin who broke through from 22 metres out and was held up
just short of the line. Rockcliff pressed away at the Yarm
defence and eventually the hard working home pack were rewarded
when James Carson crossed over from two metres out to
score. Once again Waddell added the conversion, and Rockcliff
secured a good home win to ease their relegation worries.

Rockcliff Vikings 10 - Gateshead 3rd XV 32 |
|
The Vikings put up a
good fight against a powerful Gateshead outfit, and had a fair share
of the game once they got the ball away from the visitors
pack. Johnny Gould was in inspirational form and he started and
finished the move that lead to the Vikings first try. He then broke
away to send Chris Foster clear of the home defence. Foster shipped
the ball on to scrum half Jimmy Arachnid who scampered into the
Gateshead 22 metre zone with Drew Shardlow in close support.
Arachnid then passed the ball on to Shardlow who dived into the
corner to score. Archnid was fittingly named man of the match for
an outstandng display in his last game in a Rockcliff shirt before
moving away from the area. |
