Rockcliff
ensured their survival in Durham and Northumberland Division
2 with this win over fellow strugglers Guisborough. The
visitors got off to a good start, scoring an unconverted try
in the first five minutes when their backs put together a
good move which caught the home defence napping and their
winger cut in to score in the left hand corner. Rockcliff
took some time to get back into the game but eventually
their efforts were rewarded when winger Johnny Gould took a
cross field kick under pressure and sniped throught to score
for 5-5.
Johnny Gould scored two of Rockcliffs
four tries
In the second half Rockcliff upped the gears and again found a
way through the Guisborough rearguard when the back row put
together a good move to set Gould free, and he passed
back inside to the supporting figure of flanker Noel Mather.
Lock Neil Thornton then took the ball on and he passed to Josh
Donnelly to finish the move off. Andrew Webster added the
conversion to put Rockcliff 12-5 up.
With their tails up Rockcliff began to play with confidence and
when scrum half Ross Bailey put his opposite number under
pressure at a scrum the Guisborough stand off tried to retrieve
the situation but Gould was alert to the opportunity and he
hacked through and followed up to score his second try of the
game.
Gould
capped an impressive performance when, following more pressure from
Rockcliff, he tackled his opposite number in the visitors 22 metre
zone, and Donnelly took advantage of the spilled ball to pick up and
cut through to score Rockliffs fourth and final try of the game.
