Johnny Gould was called back to the
first team |
Rockcliff edged out Barnard Castle in a tight game at Hillheads last
saturday. It was thirty two minutes before either side scored, and
Josh Donnelly did the honours for Rockcliff when he crossed over to
score in the corner.
There
was no change in the scoreline by half time but ten minutes into the
second half Andrew Webster landed a penalty to extend Rockcliffs
lead. The game remained finely balanced but the visitors put
themselves back in contention when the notched an uncoverted try
with ten minutes to go. Webster was unlucky with a second penalty
attempt five mintes later, his effort just fading past the left hand
post from wide out on the wing. |

The Vikings put in a
good performance a Blyth but were unable to record a win. There was

Whitley Bay Rockcliff 3rd XV 5 - Blyth 3rd XV 22 |
|
This game was much
closer than the scoreline suggests, and the Rangers battled away
until the end, with man of the match Alun James impressing with
a dynamic back row display. The Rangers had plenty of possession
but couldn't convert it into points, and were trailing 12-0 at
half time courtesy of two breakaway tries from Blyth.
In the
second half at a five metre scrum winger Michael Scott put
his opposite number under pressure and scrum half Sam Heppell
was on hand to touch down. Despite further good pressure Blyth
managed two further breakaway scores to seal the win and the
league points.

Cullercoats Colts 12 - Percy Park II 17 |
These two sides
served up an excellent match in the semi final of the County
Colts Cup.
Cullercoats (a joint side made up of Rockcliff and Percy Park
Under 18's) were trailing 12- at half time, and they fell
further behind when, despite an excellent cover tackle by full
back John Paul Hipkin, Park had the players in support to notch
a third try. This inspired Cullercoats to rally and they
dominated the rest of the match. Good play by the forwards, with
Johnny Birkett and Drew Shardlow dominating in the loose, led to
a powerful drive which saw Ollie Gilmour touch down for 17-5.
Lewis Broderick was unlucky with the conversion attempt, but
Cullercoats kept up the pressure and following a poor penalty by
Park Drew Liddell counter attached from deep and touched down
under the posts. This time Broderick was on target and at 17-12
Cullercoats threw everything into the game, but they just
couldnt find a way through the Park defence and a relieved Percy
Park managed to cling on to the end.
