Rockcliff 0 - Sunderland 49 Photos by Jenny Reynolds
Five
minutes after the break Sunderland edged further ahead with an unconverted
try, and shortly afterwards they added a penalty to extend their lead to
22-0. Despite their best efforts the Rockcliff pack could not gain enough
possession and the visitor’s backs looked a constant threat. In a twenty
minute spell they scored three more tries, one of which they converted, and
a penalty, to kill the game off as a contest by the half hour mark. They
added a final late converted try to rub salt into Rockcliff’s wounds and the
game ended with the visitors score at 49-0. |

Despite the
score line no one let Rockcliff down, and this Sunderland team, already
averaging 50 points game after only three matches, looks to be geared up to
compete at a much higher level than Durham and Northumberland Division 2.
Next week Rockcliff travel to Whitby in the league.

Gateshead 2nd XV 79 -
Rockcliff Vikings 0
The Vikings just did not turn up to the office in a game that is best put behind them. Gateshead’s second string have started the season well, but the Vikings usually show more spirit than this, and the will need to redeem themselves at home to Border Park next week. |

Rockcliff Rangers 12 - Alnwick 19 The Rangers lost this game in the final minute of the game, having recovered from an early set back to level the scores at 12-12. The Alnwick pack dominated the tight for much of the first half, and the Rangers tried in vain to match them. A lucky bounce from a kick and chase effort from Alnwick left full back Paul Dean flat footed as Alnwick’s inside centre scuttled through to score their opening try. Their second try came from a forward drive which the Rangers could not contain, and their number eight picked up and drove over to score. They added a conversion to take 12-0 half time lead. In the second half the Rangers changed their tactics. Faced for once with a larger pack, the out girthed Rangers decided to keep the ball moving. Scrum half Jimmy Arachnid inspired a rally by the home side, and with the forwards supporting the backs, prop Steve Hayles popped up at inside centre to stroll through and score. Johnny Wilson then got into the action, crashing over to score the Rangers second of the game. Dave Swinburne added a conversion to level the scores at 12-12. For the rest of the half the Rangers strove to find the winning score, but, against the run of play, Alnwick broke away to score a converted try to steal the game.

Rockcliff U15s 15 - Gateshead U15s 21 Rockcliff under 15’s travelled to Gateshead and although they didn’t win they played some of the best rugby the team has witnessed. Rockcliff scored three excellent tries through Steven Mather, Donald Gilgrest and Mark Herron. Man of the match was Jamie Shardlow who produced the tackle of the game. Gateshead U16s 17 - Rockcliff U16s 12 Rockcliff threw this game away with poor tackling and lack of discipline. Key players for Rockcliff were hooker Drew Shardlow, Jonny Birkett and Liam Madison who made a fight of the game. Also Scott Fairburn had an excellent game on the wing. This team needs to do a lot of soul searching and hard work if they are to improve this season, and they need to work hard on training nights to achieve their potential.
